Solenoids in lifts, elevators and hoists: an invisible job

Solenoids are small components that are essential in the operation of lifts and elevators in general.
These devices use the magnetic force generated by electric current to perform various functions in different types of machinery, such as lifts, hoists, industrial lifts and lifts for people with reduced mobility.

High-performance linear solenoids are the most widely used option in this sector, as they are more efficient than hydraulic or pneumatic systems. This advantage translates into lower energy consumption and lower operating costs. In addition, they offer more precise motion control, which improves safety and comfort in vertical transport systems.

In other cases, dual-winding industrial linear solenoids can also be used. The presence of two independent windings provides more precise control of the braking force, which increases safety in emergency situations. The power of each winding of these solenoids can be customised, and in the event of a failure of them, the other can continue to operate smoothly.

Solenoids for lifts and hoisting systems

Solenoids can be used in different parts of lifts, elevators and hoists: in the lift car doors themselves, in general and emergency brakes, or even in the speed limiter. Generally, these solenoids or electromagnets are of the “fail-secure” type, which means that the lift doors remain closed at all times until the electromagnet receives a flow of electric current, creating a magnetic field that opens the doors. As soon as the current stops, the doors close automatically, ensuring that they remain closed even in the event of a power failure.

The role of solenoids in the braking system of lifts is crucial, as they ensure safety in emergency situations. The solenoids installed in the safety brakes are automatically activated in case of failure of the main braking system, ensuring a safe stop of the lift.

In addition, the solenoids can play an important role in the safety speed limiter. When the lift exceeds a certain speed, the solenoid acts by braking the system.

Another of the most common applications of solenoids is the electromechanical parachute. The parachute is a safety stop element, braking the system in case of a fall. Generally, linear solenoids are used.
