What are reversible solenoids?
Unlike traditional solenoids that have a fixed polarity when activated, reversible solenoids offer a much more dynamic functionality. A standard solenoid generates a magnetic field with defined north and south poles when current is applied. While we can change its polarity by reversing the current direction, this is usually a manual action or requires specific design changes.
Reversible solenoids take this capability a step further. They are designed so that their polarity can be altered quickly and efficiently, often controlled by an electronic system. This is typically achieved through special winding configurations and circuitry that allow precise redirection or switching of current through the coils.
Where are these solenoids used?
Imagine a solenoid that can attract an object one moment and repel it the next, or instantly change the direction of its magnetic force. This capability opens up a world of possibilities:
- In industrial environments, reversible solenoids can be used to pick up and release ferromagnetic objects with great control, reversing polarity to release the load without the need for additional mechanisms.

Our reversible solenoids
At Nafsa, we have developed two main lines of reversible solenoids, each designed for specific applications:
- Reversible linear solenoids, where each coil controls one direction of movement. By applying voltage to coil 1 or 2, movement is activated in the corresponding direction. The power of each coil can be customized according to the specific requirements of each application.
- Bistable reversible linear solenoids, which represent the pinnacle of energy efficiency in this technology. They offer equivalent force in both directions and maintain fixed positions through built-in magnets. The transition from one position to another is achieved via a controlled electromagnetic pulse, maintaining the positions afterward without continuous power consumption.
